Butler-Laing family papers, 1818-1892 (bulk 1865-1871).

These Papers chiefly shed light on the daily lives of women of the Butler Family. The Papers extend from 1818 to 1892. The bulk, from 1865 through 1871, encompasses Mrs. Laing's detailed diaries and letters from Rome and all of her grown daughter Mary's letters to her. Also included in the collection are a shipboard diary of Mrs. Laing's voyage to and from China in 1836-1837 and a diary of her husband on one of his many voyages, 1846-1847. At the heart of the collection are the letters between Mrs. Laing and her daughters Mary and Harriet. These etch in close detail both the extraordinary moments (a wedding; a death in the family; assassination of President Lincoln) and the commonplace moments (shopping; traveling) of these women's lives. Additional manuscript volumes are a recipe book, a volume tracing the genealogy of Mrs. Laing's father's family, and some of Mrs. Laing's fiction. Other series include letters sent by Mrs. Laing's father and her husband. The Civil War is touched on only tangentially in these Papers. The Papers tell the story of ordinary life for a family able to live and travel comfortably as part of the 19th century northeastern American mainstream.
